nature/culture west

John R. Campbell works at the nature/culture nexus, focusing on the American West. His texts, images, and musical performances delve into natural history, post-existential philosophy, cultural criticism, and the chaos and comfort of human relationships. The art is informed by years of road trips, myriad small towns, the occasional city, and wilderness solitude. Campbell, originally from Chicago, has lived in California, Utah, and Oregon. He has worked as a ranch-hand, an agricultural laborer, and a university instructor. He has published his poems and essays in leading literary journals both nationally and internationally, and has won awards from Poets and Writers, The Utah Arts Council, and the Fulbright Foundation. He lives in Corvallis, Oregon, where he teaches cultural studies for the Oregon State University Honors College.
